It was a back-and-forth battle between two of the region's top 10 Class 5A girls' basketball teams, but the Dekaney Wildcats came out on top of the Tomball Cougars in a 78-75 double overtime victory, earning them this week's honor of being named High School Sports Live Team of the Week.
That huge win for the Wildcats left Dekaney head coach Stacey Stroman speechless and surprised.
"I thought we could do well," Stroman said. "I thought we could compete, but I never expected us to be 24-3 at this point and 8-0 in district, especially our district. It's tough. So, to be where we are in the place where we're in, (it's) definitely unexpected."
Unexpected or not, the sophomore duo of Caitlin Diaz and Alexis Durley showed up big with 31 points and 32 points respectively.
"It was special to me," senior Sakatherine Johnson said. "I know Coach wanted it bad. We just went out there and took care of business."
While the Wildcats took care of business, they also took sole possession of first place in the District 13-5A race, which is quite an achievement considering the team has only two seniors on its roster and the program is only two years old.
The young program continues to get better, according to Durley because of all the hard work they put in, making for an exciting team to watch.
"As a coach, and probably as a spectator, it's probably the best game I've seen in a long time," Stroman said.
