Hurricane Ike led many Houstonians to seek shelter, live without power or water and deal with many disruptions to their normal, daily routine. But it would not deter the Morton Ranch Mustangs from playing football.
As one of the first teams to head back to the field since Ike, the Mavericks took a dire situation and made it a positive one. They played for the many people that were looking for a little diversion after the storm.
And they came up big. With only one day of prep to ready for the game, Morton Ranch went on to beat Seven Lakes by one point, in a tight 21-20 game.
"The team stepped up through adversity," Head Coach Scott Svendsen said. "They stepped up to the challenge, and we got another win."
Last year, the team had a 1-19 record. But now in their third year of varsity play, the Mavericks have posted a 3-0 record, more wins then they had in the last two seasons.
"It's great gaining respect and showing everyone what we can put out," Defensive End Eddie Zahnle said.
Linebacker Rashaad Patterson is just happy to be part of a winning team.
"To have confidence again is nice," Patterson said. "I like it a lot."
So do the Morton Ranch fans.
