Erik Williams, a senior player for the Cy Woods Wildcats, is one of the top players in the greater Houston area and the Class 5A scoring leader, averaging 23 points a game.
But what put him over the top to be our Athlete of the Week was his performance in the game against Langham Creek. He scored 26 points, had 16 rebounds and to cap it off, blocked 17 shots.
Coach John Harmatuk credits the rest of the team's efforts to get Williams the ball, but said that his off-the-court workouts are what helped him break through this year.
"He was always going to put up big numbers because he's so talented and he was doing that early on, but he needed to do some extra things for us so we could start winning some basketball games," Harmatuk said. "After the Christmas break, he started figuring out he needed to be more of a leader in practice and more of a leader defensively.
"Since he's done that, we've won eight of 10 games."
Besides stepping up as a leader, Williams increased his workouts over the summer, hitting the court at least four times a week.
"Pretty much my whole basketball career is going to be based on how hard I work, and I know I need to continue to work hard if I want to become successful," Williams said.
