Athlete of the Week

Aaron-Mike Davis

The Wheatley Wildcats have been on a roll this season with a 21-3 record and an average of 84 points scored per game, making them the second best in all of Houston.

Among the players contributing to their success is senior Aaron-Mike Davis, the leading scorer in the greater Houston area with 25 points per game.

"I probably put that on my teammates," Davis said. "They put me in positions to make plays, and they look for me to make plays. I do it for them."

While Davis may be modest about his success, Coach Willie Patrick isn't.

"He does more things," Patrick said. "He sees mismatches. He calls plays for himself. He's just intelligent when it comes to the game. He's a step ahead of a lot of guys."

Patrick also singles out Davis for his leadership, especially one who has played on three different teams in the last three years. Davis played his sophomore season at Langham Creek and his junior year at St. Pius before landing at Wheatley.

"It's a great feeling to have a guy come in to be a leader for our ball club," Patrick said. "We're very happy to have him be a Wildcat."

And while Patrick is happy, Davis was nervous at first.

"I was kind of nervous knowing the expectations," Davis said. "But they welcomed me with open arms."

Now the defending state semi-finalists, who were ranked No. 1 in Class 4A in the state as of last week, are looking to go even further this year with the help of Davis and the Wheatley community.

"Playing at Wheatley day in and day out – the fans come to support us, the community is behind us 100 percent – it's amazing," Davis said.
